Introducing Thinking Beyond Borders’ 2020 Graduating Class!

What Is Gap Year Graduation?

Each spring has brought a cherished occasion at Thinking Beyond Borders for the past 12 years; the graduation of our 7-month Global Gap Year program. Kelly Sanders, TBB’s Director of Programs, describes graduation as “the opportunity for students to share a snapshot of their transformative gap year with friends and family. It’s a celebration and deep reflection through the lens of a more liberated learner as they transition home to put their learning into practice with more critical consciousness.”

What Is The Biggest Highlight?

Each student is asked to share a Presentation of Learning, or a crafted reflection on their individual growth over the course of the program.  Each year brings its own flavor and colorful stories, but certain trends emerge which make graduation a truly inspiring celebration for not only our students, but the greater TBB community which now includes over 350 student and staff alumni.

Amid the ongoing outbreak of COVID-19, this year’s graduation included the novel twist of taking our normal celebration online to a virtual zoom call.  And despite the unusual circumstances, this year’s graduates did not disappoint!  Instead they blew us away with their adaptability, introspection, self-awareness, honesty and spirit.  In unprecedented times of pandemic, witnessing this level of learning and growth in our students keeps us focused, inspired and focused on the path forward. And we weren’t the only ones!

“We were all blown away by the presentations today. Frankly we had no idea what to expect, but I don’t even know if we could have imagined what we were going to experience. Thank you for including all of us and giving us the ability to include other family members and friends in this. I think the whole family was in tears.”  -TBB Parent

“TBB graduation is special to me because it is one of those rare times that you can witness positive, substantial transformation second-hand. What’s impressive is not only the transformation, but the quality and honesty with which each gapper can articulate their story and subsequent intentions to serve the world better.” -Steve Fox, CEO of Impact Global Education
