Cost & Breakdowns

Thinking Beyond Borders offers the highest quality gap year programs. Tuition prices represent the costs of overseeing safety, providing professional educators, and ensuring appropriate learning environments set a new standard in international education. We are deeply committed to providing a valuable educational experience that prepares students for successful and fulfilling careers creating meaningful social impact. We make strong efforts to ensure our programs are accessible to all students, regardless of financial need. Unfortunately, frequent flyer miles cannot be used for these tickets because they are purchased at group discount rates. You can learn more about ways to make your TBB program possible by visiting the Fundraising Tuition and Scholarships tabs. If you have any questions or concerns about tuition and payment, please email us for more information.

What Isn’t Included

Students will need spending money for incidentals, expenses incurred during Independent Student Travel, and snacks. TBB recommends students budget $50 per program week for spending money. However, please note that managing this spending is the responsibility of the students. While Program Leaders can help students plan ahead, it is ultimately the responsibility of students to manage these funds throughout the year.

TBB provides financial assistance to ensure all qualified applicants to our gap year programs are able to participate. Unfortunately, we are not able to offer scholarships for our college study abroad programs at this time. All of our scholarships are need-based. Scholarships are part of a broader set of ways we support students and families in paying tuition. We also support student fundraising efforts. Students who qualify for scholarship are strongly encouraged to fundraise through our partnership with Depending on the student’s level of financial need, TBB may match funds raised by the student through

TBB determines financial need the same way colleges do. Scholarship applicants share information similar to what colleges use to determine financial aid packages. However, we understand that a gap year comes in addition to the cost of college. We subtract $10,000 from your Estimated Family Contribution (EFC). Your EFC then determines your financial need and the maximum scholarship that you are eligible to receive from TBB.

Our fundraising partner is a crowd-funding platform. It’s a tool to create momentum and attract donors to your campaign. TBB staff will support student fundraising efforts and promote student campaigns through social media. We’ve had strong success helping applicants to our gap year programs raise the funds needed for tuition.

You can apply for a TBB scholarship while completing your application.

Make your TBB program a reality by fundraising for your tuition. We provide tools and support to help students raise funds toward their tuition. In past years, individual students have raised as much as $26,000! With the right tools, good strategy, and hard work, you can raise funds and help pay for your TBB program, too.

One of the ways we support student fundraising is through our fundraising partnership with, a crowd-funding platform. Starting an campaign on TBB’s partner page is a great way to create momentum and attract a wider audience of donors to your campaign. TBB staff will be available to support student fundraising efforts, and TBB will promote student campaigns through social media and other networks.

Additionally, we provide staff support and guidance to students as they develop their fundraising campaign. Once you’ve applied and been accepted, TBB staff will be available to assist you in planning and carrying out your efforts to raise funds. What do successful campaigns include? You’ll reach out to your family and community and explain why a program with Thinking Beyond Borders is an important step in preparing you to address critical global issues. Using email, Facebook, Twitter, and even hand written letters, you can share you message broadly as you ask your community to invest in you and your commitment to our world. You can host events, reach out to local businesses, and pursue grants from organizations like Rotary and Kiwanis. The possibilities are endless. With support from TBB, the more work you put in, the more funds you will raise.
