Tess is an alumna of our Latin America Gap Semester of Fall 2018. After her semester with Thinking Beyond Borders, she continued traveling and is planning on attending Scripps College next Fall to major in linguistics, environmental policy, Spanish, or something social justice-related.
How has your gap experience influenced/contributed to your academic and professional goals?
TBB gave me the critical lens through which to learn about world issues, organizations, and people and places. It has made me more passionate about environmental justice and introduced me to environmental-racial justice, which I’m now eager to learn about in school.
How did your gap year influence your approach to social justice?
I have a strong foundation after TBB for learning more about the social justice world. I know lots about aid organizations, history, politics, and current issues. I feel like now I can enter into conversations and classes with serious background knowledge of social justice. I also see how there are many different types of careers in social justice.
What’s one piece of advice you’d have for anyone considering taking a gap year?
Do it! Take a leap and don’t look back. Throw yourself into studying something you never have in school, through something like TBB. Take time for self-exploration and -reflection, and adopt new practices in your everyday life towards bettering yourself and growing yourself in ways you couldn’t when your time was occupied with school.
Thanks for sharing with us, Tess, and good luck in college!
