How has your gap experience influenced/contributed to your academic and professional goals?

TBB made me realize that I wanted to continue my travels and remain an engaged global citizen. Since my time with TBB, I’ve lived, worked, studied, and volunteered in more than 95 countries. I even served as a Peace Corps Volunteer teaching English in Madagascar.

How did your gap year influence your approach to social justice?
I think that so many of the problems in this world are caused by ignorance and people’s fears of accepting what they don’t understand. TBB showed me what it meant to really try and understand those who are different from me. My travels around the world have proven that taking the time to immerse yourself in someone else’s culture and live life from another perspective actually makes the world a much smaller place.
What’s one piece of advice you’d have for anyone considering taking a gap year?
Taking a gap year will undoubtedly be one of the most rewarding experiences of your life. Seize every opportunity to appreciate this world while there’s still a world to appreciate.
Thanks for sharing with us, Erika!!
